Big Changes Are Coming to United Airlines Starting June 3 – Are You Ready?
Summer travel season is taking off fast, and if you’re one of the millions planning to fly, there’s something you need to know—especially if you’re flying with United Airlines.
AAA is already predicting a packed Memorial Day weekend with 3.61 million Americans expected to fly—up 2% from last year. Major cities like Chicago, New York, Orlando, Denver, and Seattle are topping the travel charts, and flights are expected to hit levels even higher than before the pandemic.
But amid all this travel hype, United Airlines just quietly announced a change that could leave unprepared passengers stranded at the gate.
What’s Happening on June 3?
Starting June 3, United Airlines will enforce a new rule: all domestic passengers without checked luggage must check in at least 45 minutes before departure—up from the previous 30-minute requirement. Miss that window? You’re not flying.
That’s right—no more squeezing through with a last-minute check-in. If you’re not checked in by the 45-minute mark, you won’t be boarding that flight.
Why the Change?
According to United, this move is meant to streamline operations and improve efficiency. The extra time gives agents the breathing room to help with luggage, seating issues, and other arrangements. Basically, they want things running smoother—and faster.
What About International Flights?
Don’t worry, that part stays the same. The check-in deadline for international flights remains 60 minutes before takeoff.
The Bottom Line
If you’re flying United domestically after June 3 and you’re not checking a bag, set a reminder. Plan ahead. Get to the airport early. Because the days of cutting it close are officially over.
Want to save on flights too? AAA suggests booking trips that depart on Tuesdays and return on Wednesdays. Avoid weekends if you’re looking to keep costs down.
So—are you ready for the change? Or will you be one of the passengers caught off guard on June 3?
You’ve been warned.
